Bamboo Fly Rod Care & Maintenance

If you already own bamboo fly rods, you should know that they are a big investment, and you will need to take care of your investment. Bamboo rods are not just an investment of your money, but of your time as well. Taking the time to properly care and maintain your rods is essential in order to ensure that they last as long as possible and serve you as best as only a bamboo fly rod can.

Here are some tips for caring for your bamboo fly rod:

Cleaning Cork Grips

To clean the cork grips of your bamboo fly rod, you can use cleaners such as dish soap, toothpaste, or a mild bleach. Afterwards, use a damp cloth to remove all of it. Be sure there is none of the cleaner left on the cork. That may cause the cork to dry out too much and eventually might even begin to crack.

If your rod’s cork grip has accumulated build up, use fine grit sandpaper to remove it. As always, be careful as to not damage the cork.

Cleaning Ferrules

Apply a bit of Vaseline or some other type of petroleum jelly onto the male ferrules. Apply some as well to the female ferrules. This loosens up the build up and in addition will defend the metals from oxidation.

Remove any leftover Vaseline from the female section using a Q-tip. Use a clean dry cloth to do the same for the male section and outside portions of the female ferrule. If there are stains or that are difficult  to remove, you can try using denatured alcohol. Be careful not to spill any on the varnish!

Sometimes the ferrules of your bamboo fly rod become oxidized. If that happens, you can try using a fine grit sandpaper to buff out and remove the oxidation. Just be sure not to strip off too much metal because then the ferrules will not fit the same.

Bamboo fly rods are unlike any other fishing rods. They are practically works of art. By properly maintaining their appearance, you’ll be sure to enjoy their beauty time and time again.

Polishing

First, wipe off your bamboo fly rod with a dry, clean cloth. Wipe off your bamboo rods regularly to maintain their appearance. Removing the elements such as water, dust, and dirt as fast as possible will help minimize any damaging effects they may have on the rod’s materials.

For polishing, you can use a kind of furniture polish in paste form. Get a soft, clean, dry cloth and apply the polish. Besides bringing the nice gleaming shine out of your bamboo fly rod, the polish also acts as protection.

Storage

Wipe off your bamboo fly rod with soft clean cloth until it is clean and dry. If you are going to be storing your bamboo fly rod for a very long time, you should wax the rod for additional protection.

Take apart the pieces of the rod and carefully place them inside a soft rod sack. Then put the sack inside a protective tube. Make the rod lay flat if possible as this is the best way to store it. It is also best not to store your bamboo fly rod in an environment with extreme conditions such as excessive heat, cold, or moisture.
